Why wax esters

Standard fish oil contains omega-3 in triglyceride form — the result of industrial processing. Calanus® oil contains them in wax ester form, exactly as Calanus finmarchicus naturally synthesises them. This form is characterised by slower but more stable release and significantly lower susceptibility to oxidation.

TOTOX is an index of total fat oxidation — a lower number means fresher, less oxidised oil. Calanus® has a certified TOTOX ≤3. Standard fish oil at point of sale typically reaches values of 20–50+. Oxidised oil can cause unpleasant odour and reflux.

Calanus finmarchicus is a small marine crustacean from Arctic Norwegian waters. Due to its small size and low position in the food chain, it has significantly lower bioaccumulation of heavy metals than predatory fish. The product undergoes laboratory purity testing.

Recommended dose: 2–4 capsules daily with a fat-containing meal. Maximum permitted dose under EU regulation: up to 6 capsules per day.

No. Omega-3 Calanus® capsules are made from fish gelatine, not plant-based HPMC. Calanus finmarchicus is a crustacean (marine zooplankton), not a fish, but the product is not suitable for vegans or for those with an allergy to fish and shellfish.

TOTOX (Total Oxidation Index) is a measure of fat freshness and quality — a combination of the peroxide value and the anisidine value. The lower the TOTOX, the fresher and less oxidised the oil. Oxidised oil can have a fishy smell, cause reflux, and may negatively affect health. Calanus® carries a certified TOTOX ≤3, which is significantly lower than most standard fish oils on the market.

The recommended dose is 2–4 capsules per day. At 2 capsules/day you receive 69 mg EPA + 51 mg DHA. Many European nutritional guidelines for heart health cite 250–500 mg EPA+DHA daily — at 4 capsules you approach this range. The maximum permitted dose is 6 capsules/day under EU regulation.
