What food to pack for a hike? 6 functional and tasty tips

5 min. reading

For a trip to be great in every respect, it is good to prepare a snack or lunch that will keep hunger away without leaving you feeling heavy afterwards. Empty calories and simple sugars are not enough on their own, we need food that gives us energy ideally for a longer time. We have written down a few simple pieces of advice and specific tips on what food to pack into your rucksack for a whole-day hike.

1. A filling apple smoothie with cashews and dates

You will need an apple, about 5 dates, a handful of cashew nuts or a tablespoon of Powerlogy Cashew Cream 330 g, a cup of plant milk (oat, almond or coconut). Biohackers will certainly be glad to add a tablespoon of MCT oil and a green superfood such as barley grass.

Why is a smoothie a great snack?

  • It offers not only simple but also complex carbohydrates and fibre + a dose of vitamins and minerals that give the body a lift.
  • It is easily digestible, quickly gives energy and on top of that keeps you full for longer.
  • The fats from nuts contain a high amount of monounsaturated fatty acids, which are an excellent source of energy for the body.
  • It does not burden the digestive tract and does not cause feelings of heaviness.
  • It is very easy to prepare, it does not take up much space in a rucksack and so it is practical!

2. A snack with cottage cheese and vegetables

Sandwiches easily stand in for lunch, especially when they contain ham, cheese, a quark spread or tuna + any vegetables you like. Making them yourself is definitely a better choice than shop-bought products, which are mostly made of white bread and contain risky mayonnaise.

Most bread is largely made of white wheat flour. That does not give us anything extra; it even sticks the intestines together and burdens them needlessly. It is therefore better to use other doughs – wholemeal, rye, spelt or sourdough. Sourdough bread has a lower glycaemic index and keeps you full for longer, making you more resistant to diving into the next course (if you still have one in your rucksack).

3. A chocolate bar

When someone says chocolate, we all picture our favourite – dark, milk, white or with nuts. There is only a very small percentage of people in the world who do not like this food. Not only does it taste really good, but if it is good quality, dark and with a high content of cacao, then it is even very functional. It is suitable for all active people, even when your goal is Lomnický štít. Powerlogy Chocobar 70 % 50 g is a select Bean-to-Bar chocolate of the Criollo variety with hazelnuts and cane sugar. Without palm oil, milk, gluten and artificial preservatives. Powerlogy Kurkuma Chocobar 50 g is our unique novelty, in which we combine much-loved white chocolate with almonds, coconut and turmeric. The base of the bar is up to 40% quality cacao butter, sweetened exclusively with coconut sugar, with an almost 2x lower content than in ordinary white chocolates. It is worth mentioning that they are made in Slovakia.

4. Gluten-free madeleines

Take some biscuits with you too. They will come in handy as a smaller snack that gives you energy. You will appreciate that above all when hiking or cycling. Do not choose sweets with a filling or a coating, there would not be much left of them. Again we recommend preparing biscuits like this at home rather than buying them in a supermarket or in various mountain snack bars. Why? Because at home you can prepare them without unnecessary additives and on top of that without gluten. If you are looking for inspiration, you will find a very simple and tasty recipe for homemade madeleines here.

5. Homemade raw bars

Today there are plenty of protein bars available on the market that can replace a main meal. But if you have a little time to spare before a hike, we recommend preparing your own bars. This recipe does not require any great culinary skills. No-bake raw bars are ready in no time and anyone can manage them (even a complete beginner).

On top of that you can prepare them exactly to your taste, limit the amount of added sugar, and if you happen to be going on a trip with a vegan, a coeliac or someone with allergies, you can confidently offer them some. The sweetness from the dates harmonises nicely with the bitterness of the chocolate and it is quite possible that half a bar will be enough for you at once.

6. Nut squeeze packs

Nuts really do have a whole range of advantages. Their strength is a high content of vitamins (especially the B group), minerals, proteins and quality fats. Thanks to a higher concentration of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids they are literally nutrition for the brain (we know the brain is the “boss”, and when it is satisfied, so is the whole body with it). A handful of nuts gives your body fibre, calcium and other basic nutrients that are important for proper functioning and for restoring energy.

Members of Hikemates had the chance to test our novelty and they probably will not go on a hike without it again. Hazelnut cream and delicious cashew cream in practical squeeze packaging is completely ideal for travel, sport or a snack, for adults and children alike. Both nut creams from Powerlogy also contain MCT oil. From the creams you draw tasty, easily digestible and more stable energy.

You see, even a snack for the road can be prepared healthily. It is enough to use basic ingredients and nothing else can come of it than a tasty and functional treat for the road. That way you fill the body up, give it the right nutrients and enough fibre, and you enjoy the whole day full of energy.
