The most popular food supplement of recent years? Collagen, without question! The market has burst open with all kinds of brands offering “the very best” one. Which is not quite how it works, is it. There are several types and sources of collagen and each one suits a different need. So how does it actually work? What collagens are there and which collagen is the best? Read on in our article.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most important and most abundant protein in our body. It is found in skin, hair, bones, joints, tendons and the gut. It works like a kind of “glue” that holds our whole body together. Collagen production naturally declines with age – and with it come the first wrinkles, finer hair, loss of skin elasticity, joint discomfort, digestive changes… fortunately, you can top up your collagen intake reliably with a suitable diet and a good-quality food supplement.
What types of collagen are there?
There are more than 20 types of collagen in total, but the most important ones for our body are types I, II, III, IV and V and the specific type X (or collagen type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10).
Collagen type 1 / I is the most widespread type in the body. It occurs in bones, tendons, teeth, ligaments and skin.
The sources of this type of collagen are: bovine collagen (skin and bones), fish and chicken collagen.
Collagen type 2 / II is found in cartilage and in the intervertebral discs. It is the main structural collagen of cartilage, which is why it is usually associated with the musculoskeletal system.
The best sources of this type are: chicken cartilage, chicken sternum, and sometimes bovine cartilage.
Collagen type 3 / III is found in skin, blood vessels, muscles and organs. It occurs alongside type I and forms part of the structure of the skin and of vessel walls.
The sources of type III collagen are: bovine collagen (mainly organs and skin), and partly also fish collagen.
Collagen type 4 / IV occurs in basement membranes and supports the cells within tissues. It forms part of the filtration structures of organs such as the liver, kidneys and digestive tract.
This type is harder to extract and is obtained from organ tissue (for example from bovine or porcine kidneys, lungs or intestines).
Collagen type 5 / V occurs in the placenta, in hair and in the cornea of the eye. It plays a part in the formation of collagen fibres and of hair structure.
It is obtained from bovine and chicken tissue, sometimes also from placenta and egg membranes.
The specific collagen type 10 / X is formed in hypertrophic cartilage (a transitional form of cartilage during the formation of bone). It is therefore involved in the development and growth of bone, particularly during childhood and adolescence, and in the proper conversion of cartilage into bone.

As you can see, the collagen range in our e-shop really is a varied one. How do you choose the collagen that suits you best? That, and the answers to other frequently asked questions about collagen, you will find in the next chapter.

Frequently asked questions about collagen
Collagen is a really broad topic and finding your way around it need not be easy for everyone. Let us answer the most common questions together.
Which collagen is best for beauty, recovery and joints?
- For beauty reach for collagen types I and III, ideally with added vitamin C or biotin. The most easily absorbed one for this purpose is fish collagen.
- For recovery hydrolysed collagen types I and III and types V and X are suitable, and mainly bovine collagen.
- For joints type II is the usual choice, mainly bovine and chicken collagen.
Which collagen is best for skin and which for hair?
For skin, types I and III are the usual choice, best in combination with vitamin C, and for hair, types I and III again.
When should you take collagen?
Collagen is best taken in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening just before bed, ideally together with vitamin C – for better absorption.
How do you take collagen powder?
You can take collagen powder stirred into plain water or fruit juice, and some customers also like it mixed into coffee – our Powerlogy Choco Collagen, for example.
Collagen – dosage
Always take collagen according to the manufacturer’s instructions – in the case of our products you will find them both on the website and on the packaging itself. The included scoops will help you too.
Does collagen have side effects?
Collagen can have side effects too. Most often these are bloating or other digestive complaints. Occasionally an allergic reaction appears, for example with marine collagen – so check before taking it that you are not allergic to its composition. You can head off digestive trouble by increasing your collagen dose gradually and by reaching for a genuinely good-quality collagen – which, in our e-shop, every one of them is.
Collagen for women vs. collagen for men
This is purely a marketing move – “women’s collagens” contain collagens aimed at beauty, “men’s collagens” those aimed at recovery and at muscles and bones. This split is completely unnecessary, though, because anyone can take whichever collagen matches what they are looking for.
Collagen really is a big topic and we hope we have answered all your curious questions. Do have a look at the whole section of our collagen products and if there is anything else about collagen you want to know, contact us.
